MANILA, Philippines – Several student organizations from different universities called for an academic walkout to protest against Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr’s presumptive win in the presidential elections.
On May 9, the UP Office of Student Regent (UPOSR) urged the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) to show accountability. They also asserted that there should be no classes under the Marcos presidency.
“Tapat tayong lumahok sa eleksyon. Ngunit, pandaraya at paglabag sa batas ang sagot ng administrasyon. Hindi tayo papayag na pamunuan tayo ng mga magnanakaw at mamamatay-tao,” the UPOSR posted on their Facebook and Twitter page.
(We participated in the elections in good faith. But, fraud and violations of the law are the reply of the administration. We will not allow the thieves and murderers to rule us.)
The Polytechnic University of the Philippines Central Student Council (PUP-CSC) also commenced a petition to suspend classes and hold a protest against the Marcos regime.
In addition, the Far Eastern University Central Student Organization (FEU-CSO) also declared a student walkout in response to Marcos’ lead in the presidential elections.
Moreover, the Sanggunian ng mga Mag-aaral ng mga Paaralang Loyola ng Ateneo de Manila, Committee on Graduate Student Concerns (CGSC), Ateneo Law Student Council and Ateneo School of Medicine & Public Health Student Council (ASMPH) said in a joint statement: “We stand against tyranny and corruption in all of its forms. We encourage our fellow students to organize and mobilize to defend our democracy.”
As of May 12 at 2:17 p.m., Marcos leads the presidential race with 31,103,793 votes, followed by Leni Robredo with 14,821,909 votes, according to the partial and unofficial count of the COMELEC.
