CORDILLERA, Philippines - In celebration of World Press Freedom Day, Cordilleran organizations conducted a webinar entitled, “Speaking Truth to Power in the Time of Tyranny: An Online Forum on the Siege on Freedom of Expression” held on May 3 via Zoom and Facebook Live.
A creative video presentation on women human rights defenders by Luchie Maranan, Vice-chairperson for External Affairs of Dap-ayan ti Kultura iti Kordilyera , was featured in the event.
In the video, women human rights defenders said that to be a woman in these times meant fighting against tyranny and impunity. It also meant being fearless for the people.
“There are millions like us and we are breaking free in the streets, in the front lines, in workplaces, in fields, and in places they [tyrants] cannot imagine we can be,” said Maranan in the video.
Aside from the presentation, former Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno discussed cyberlibel and how to protect free speech from a legal perspective while FYT Media Chief Content Officer Voltaire Tupaz tackled digital disinformation and how it affects freedom of expression.
The event was a collaboration of Women Working for Justice and Peace Network in the Cordillera (JaPNet), Cordillera Human Rights Alliance, Northern Dispatch Weekly, the Department of Communication of the University of the Philippines Baguio (UPB), and UPB Outcrop.
