LINGAYEN, Pangasinan — Over 40 youth organizations released a statement last May 7 calling for a leadership that will prioritize the people's well-being while addressing the climate crisis.
As part of their Youth Climate Agenda 2022 for the upcoming national elections, the Youth Advocates for Climate Action Philippines (YACAP) posted a unity statement on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
“This decade is a critical period in which climate action must take on a more decisive form on a global scale, if we wish to prevent the worst impacts from happening," YACAP stated in the statement.
The unity statement claimed that the country’s next leaders should ensure that no one is left behind in the move towards climate action.
“People-centered adaptation, ambitious mitigation targets, climate justice, protection of our environment defenders, and citizen empowerment are fundamental pillars in genuine climate action,” stated YACAP in the post.
"It goes without saying that we stand against all forms of electoral fraud and all attempts to undermine our democracy," YACAP stated, reminding Filipinos to be vigilant in choosing leaders.
According to YACAP, electing leaders that can address climate change is also a chance to genuinely address other social issues like the COVID-19 pandemic and economic problems.
Still, YACAP stated that climate and social justice will always continue regardless of who wins the elections.
“As the power truly rests in the people [...] ensure our next set of leaders are held accountable to their promises and for their actions, and [...] champion genuine climate action from the ground up," stated YACAP. "For a more just and sustainable Philippines!”
